Labour pledges fast action to make renters better off

On 20 June 2024, Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Housing Secretary, will outline plans to improve renters’ lives if they win the General Election. Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP will pledge to reduce cost-of-living pressures on private sector tenants by cracking down on unscrupulous landlords, banning no-fault evictions, and capping upfront rent costs.

Labour will promise to address the shortage of rental properties by building 1.5 million new homes over five years. Abolishing Section 21 will be a priority, with the process likely starting immediately upon taking office. Changes will need to follow parliamentary processes, taking several months to implement.

Labour plans to extend Awaab’s Law to protect renters from damp, cold, and mould in rental homes. They support measures to level the playing field for tenants and believe ensuring agents are suitably qualified is essential to improve service standards and eliminate bad practices. These reforms are crucial for rental tenants in and around Kidderminster.
